International Symposium: Liver Transplantation and Liver Research in Birmingham

Medical School, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston campus, B152TT Birmingham, United Kingdom

We are delighted to inform you that the Birmingham Liver Units at the QEHB and BCH will be reaching an important milestone in the summer of 2017 by performing the 5000th Liver transplant. Coinciding with this it will be 30 years since the “Liver Patient Monitoring Area” – now the Centre for Liver Research in Birmingham was set up. To mark these two events, an International scientific symposium will take place on the 5th and 6th September 2017. We have put together an exciting programme looking at the past, present and future of Liver Disease and Liver Transplantation - including talks from the eminent pioneering liver transplant surgeon from Hôpital Paul Brousse, Paris – Professor Henri Bismuth and our own liver unit pioneers Professors McMaster, Kelly, Buckels and Elias, as well as several other internationally renowned speakers. We also have state of the art Normothermic Liver Perfusion and nurse/AHP workshops. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting! Whether you have worked in the Liver Unit, have visited as an international fellow or would like just attend the symposium and join in our celebrations, the organising committee warmly invites you to register and to submit an abstract. Prizes will be awarded to the best poster in each category and all ex-fellows who submit an abstract and register for the meeting will have their name and affiliation listed in the symposium book on a dedicated fellows page.

Congress

18th Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation

Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona, Pl. de Willy Brandt, 11-14, 08019 Barcelona, Spain

We would like to invite you to a new level of medical meetings in transplantation at the BigBangBarcelona conference. Transplantation has emerged from the decades of an early experimental procedure to an established first line therapy for organ failure. While mechanistic devices or fully artificial organs may be available in many decades from now, the fate of the patients suffering from organ failure today and in the next years, will depend on the progress we will achieve with transplantation. The discrepancy between the high demand and the shortage in organs available remains a challenge. Amongst the many obstacles highlighted at the congress, progress in transplantation with organs from living donors but also advancements in normothermic perfusion and other seminal technologies will be addressed. Novel drugs, protocols for immunomod- ulation and tolerance but also surrogate endpoints for clinical trials in order to enhance the drug develop- ment remain critically important topics in the field.

Congress

26th European Association for Tissue Bank

BHR BW Premier Hotel & Congress Center, Via Postumia Castellana, 2 , 31055 Quinto di Treviso

In this new edition, we will, as usual, address the key issues related to Tissue Banks, from quality to regulatory harmonisation at the European level, from research to cooperative study programmes. This year’s Congress will, however, have a more clinical focus compared to previous meetings, with the intent of clearly describing the part played by each “tissue” in improving treatment. The emphasis will thus fall on the tissue bank’s role as a clinical tool. Operating rooms and outpatient clinics can not only provide elements to evaluate tissue safety, but should also serve to directresearch into new tissues with a view to solving clinical problems. Accordingly, the various meeting sessions will be opened by leading clinicians in the field, who will outline how each tissue in question is currently utilised, describing use-related benefits and pitfalls, and highlighting issues that require further research efforts. Oral and poster presentations will be held; we have also planned several plenary sessions, symposia and workshops as well on the basic and clinical aspects of various fields. We also hope to encourage young research and and investigators to participate and learn more about innovative and collaborative techniques on this occasion.
